Hearing God in business:
Learning to Build With Father

Hear what he is saying

Somewhere between the board meeting, the budget review, the personnel decision, and the next growth opportunity, many Christian business leaders find themselves asking:
Is God actually speaking into the decisions I'm making—or am I largely figuring this out on my own?
That question sits at the heart of hearing God in business.
At Building A Kingdom Company (BKC), we don't believe hearing God means waiting for a dramatic word before making every business decision.
We see it as something much more relational:
Learning to walk with Father—to see what He is doing, hear what He is saying, and faithfully respond.
Jesus modeled this way of living and leading.
“The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing.” — John 5:19
That's why the BKC Strategic Foundation begins with Presence — The Source.
Before strategy, purpose, culture, or execution comes relationship with Father.

Hearing God in Business Begins With Relationship

Learning to hear God isn't primarily about mastering a spiritual technique.
Jesus said:
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
The foundation is relationship.
As sons and daughters of God, we learn to recognize Father's voice as we walk with Him.
For a Christian business owner or CEO, that can gradually change the starting point of leadership.
Instead of beginning only with:
What do I think we should do?
or even:
God, will You bless what I'm planning?
we learn to ask:
Father, what are You saying and doing?
and:
Father, what are You building—and how can I faithfully participate?
That is the heart of hearing God in business.

What Does Hearing God Look Like?

God can lead His people in different ways, but discernment should always be approached with humility.
We may sense direction through prayer, Scripture, the prompting of the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, circumstances, or a conviction that develops over time.
But not every thought, feeling, opportunity, or sense of peace necessarily comes from God.
That's why Scripture encourages us to test what we discern.
  • Does it agree with Scripture?
  • Does it reflect the character and ways of God?
  • Have I brought it before Father in prayer rather than simply asking Him to confirm what I already want?
  • Is there wisdom in seeking counsel from mature believers and trusted advisors?
  • Am I willing to wait when direction isn't clear?
  • Could fear, ambition, pride, pressure, or personal preference be influencing what I'm hearing?
Learning discernment includes learning to hold what we sense with both faith and humility.

From Discernment to Business Decisions

Hearing God in business doesn't mean abandoning sound judgment, financial analysis, market research, due diligence, or wise counsel.
It means bringing those things into relationship with Father.
At BKC, we believe spiritual discernment and excellent business practice belong together.
We listen and analyze.
We pray and plan.
We discern and execute.
Excellence is stewardship.
A leader may prayerfully sense that an opportunity deserves further exploration—and then do the necessary research.
A significant hire may involve both prayerful discernment and rigorous evaluation.
A strategic decision may require listening to Father, examining the numbers, seeking counsel, and allowing time for greater clarity.
Building with Father doesn't make business thinking less important.
It changes the source and posture from which we do it.

Learning to See and Hear Takes Time

One of the challenges with hearing God in business is our desire for certainty.
Business leaders are accustomed to making decisions and producing results. We naturally want a clear answer.
But relationship with Father isn't a formula.
Sometimes direction seems clear.
Sometimes we wait.
Sometimes we act faithfully without having complete certainty.
And sometimes we discover that what we thought we heard wasn't Father at all.
That's part of learning.
Over time, we can become more attentive to His Presence, more grounded in Scripture, more aware of our own motivations, and more willing to submit what we sense to wise counsel.
The goal isn't perfect spiritual hearing.
The goal is faithful relationship and growing responsiveness to Father.

Hearing God Changes the Question

For many Christian leaders, the biggest change isn't that Father suddenly gives them answers to every business question.
It's that they begin asking a different question.
Instead of:
“God, will You bless what I'm building?”
they increasingly ask:
“Father, what are You building—and how can I faithfully participate?”
That shift is central to Building A Kingdom Company.
It moves us from merely inviting God into our business toward learning to build in relationship with Him.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does hearing God in business mean?
Hearing God in business means learning to prayerfully discern Father's direction while leading and building a company. It isn't necessarily about receiving a specific word for every decision. It's about developing a relationship with Father that increasingly influences how you listen, discern, decide, and lead.
  • How do I know whether what I'm sensing is actually from God?
Discernment should be tested rather than automatically assumed to be God's direction. Consider whether what you're sensing agrees with Scripture and God's character, pray about it, examine your own motivations, seek wise counsel when appropriate, and allow time for clarity when circumstances permit.
  • Does hearing God replace business strategy, data, and due diligence?
No. BKC believes spiritual discernment and excellent business practice belong together. Prayer, Scripture, discernment, wise counsel, market information, financial analysis, and sound business judgment can all contribute to faithful stewardship.
  • What if I don't hear God clearly?
Lack of immediate clarity doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. Sometimes faithful leadership involves waiting, continuing to pray, seeking wisdom, gathering information, and making the wisest decision available while remaining open to Father's direction.
  • How does BKC help Christian business leaders grow in this area?
The BKC Strategic Foundation begins with Presence — The Source. We help leaders explore what it means to increasingly build from relationship with Father and allow that relationship to inform identity, purpose, culture, strategy, and stewardship.
